What many travellers only find out when it’s too late

Most problems abroad don’t start with bad luck. They start with something nobody checked before leaving. These are the kinds of situations our team helps people with every year.

The condition nobody mentioned

A traveller with a heart condition is admitted to hospital on holiday. The condition wasn’t properly declared to the insurer, the claim is questioned, and the bill lands with the family.

How we help: we look at your health before you go and help you understand what to ask your insurer.

The medication that didn’t get through

Some common prescription medicines, including certain painkillers and sleeping tablets, are restricted in countries such as Japan or the United Arab Emirates. Without the right paperwork, they can be taken away on arrival.

How we help: we check your medicines against the rules at your destination and tell you what to carry.

Turned away at the gate

A few weeks after an operation, a traveller is refused boarding because they can’t show they’re fit to fly. The trip they saved for ends at the airport.

How we help: we tell you whether you’re likely to need a fit-to-fly letter, and when to get it.

Alone in a foreign hospital

A fall on a city break. A doctor who doesn’t speak your language, decisions about treatment, and family at home with no idea what’s going on.

How we help: our doctors explain your treatment in your language and, with your permission, keep your family informed.

Your travel insurance pays when things go wrong.
Wide Horizons helps make sure they don’t.

What is Wide Horizons?

Wide Horizons is the safety net you never knew you needed, and the missing link between booking your dream trip and feeling truly confident to take it.

As the years go by, our health needs change, and a great trip starts with planning around them. That’s where we come in. Before you leave, our medical and travel experts look at your health and your destination, and give you clear, practical advice to help you avoid problems or reduce the risks. After all, the best emergency is the one that never happens.

Wide Horizons isn’t insurance. It’s the perfect complement to your travel insurance. Your insurance and its assistance team are there to cover your medical costs and manage your case if something happens abroad. We’re there to help stop it happening in the first place.

And if something does go wrong, you’re not on your own. Our 24/7 team is just one call away. With your permission, we work alongside your insurer’s assistance team, making sure nothing is missed and keeping you and your family informed, while you concentrate on getting better.

Questions we answer before you go

Good travel starts with good preparation. Our medical and travel experts look at your trip and your health, and give you clear answers before you leave.

  • Worried about travelling with a pre-existing condition?

Tell us about your health and we’ll help you plan your trip around it, from what to pack to what to do if symptoms flare up abroad.

  • Can you get your medication where you’re going?

We check whether your medicines are available at your destination, under which names, and what rules apply to bringing your own supply.

  • Which vaccinations do you need?

We tell you which vaccinations are required or recommended for your route, and when to get them so they work in time.

  • Where would you go in an emergency?

You get the local emergency numbers and the hospitals and clinics near where you’ll stay, checked by people who know the local healthcare system.

  • Are you fit to fly?

After an operation, with a heart or lung condition, or on a long-haul flight, we tell you what the airline needs and help with medical clearance forms.

  • Travelling with medical equipment?

Whether it’s a CPAP machine, insulin pump or pacemaker, we tell you what to expect at airport security, which letters to carry and what you need to use it abroad.

  • How do you take your medication across time zones?

For insulin, blood thinners and other time-sensitive medicines, we help you plan your doses around the flight and the time difference.

  • What if you need a doctor who speaks your language?

We find doctors who speak your language near where you’ll stay, and can give you a short medical summary translated into the local language.

  • Will the climate or altitude affect you?

Heat, humidity and high altitude can affect blood pressure, breathing and some medications. We tell you what to watch for at your destination.

  • Going on a cruise?

We explain what the ship’s medical centre can and can’t do, what it may cost, and which hospitals are near your ports of call.

  • Need a bit more support getting around?

We help arrange airport wheelchair assistance and check accessibility at your hotel or on excursions.

  • Staying abroad for the winter?

For longer stays, we help you arrange repeat prescriptions, check-ups and a local doctor you can rely on.

And while you’re away

Even with the best preparation, things can happen: a fall on a cobbled street, a stomach bug, or a flare-up of a long-standing condition.

When they do, you shouldn’t have to search for help in a language you don’t speak. One call to our 24/7 team puts experienced medical and travel professionals on your side. We listen, help you understand what’s happening and work alongside your insurer’s assistance team, so you get the right care quickly.

  • 24/7 medical advice

Day or night, talk to our team about symptoms, medication or where to go, and we point you to the right doctor or clinic.

  • Working with your insurer

With your permission, we work alongside your travel insurer’s assistance team, so nothing is missed and you don’t have to explain everything twice.

  • Your language, abroad

Our multilingual team works worldwide, translates medical documents and explains what’s happening in plain words.

  • Understanding your treatment

Our medical team helps you make sense of a diagnosis or treatment plan, so you can ask the right questions before you agree to anything.

  • Lost or forgotten medication

If your medicine runs out, gets lost or is left at home, we help you find the local equivalent and a pharmacy nearby.

  • Ready for the journey home

If you’ve been unwell, we help you get the medical letters and fit-to-fly documents you need, in close contact with your insurer.

Who will I speak to?

A doctor from our medical team, led by our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Leo Almeida. They look at your health and your trip together, and give you advice that fits you.

How far ahead should I book?

As soon as you know your plans. The earlier the better, especially if you might need vaccinations, as some take several weeks. Our goal is to send your brief within 48 hours of your consultation, depending on demand. Leaving very soon? Tell us, and we’ll treat it as urgent.

Do I need travel insurance?

We always recommend it. Wide Horizons isn’t insurance and doesn’t pay for medical treatment or other travel costs. Your insurance pays the bills; we help you prepare, guide you while you’re away and work alongside your insurer’s assistance team.

What if I don’t have travel insurance?

We can still help you prepare and guide you to the right care. But you would have to pay for any treatment yourself, and abroad that can be very expensive, so we strongly recommend arranging insurance before you go.

Does Wide Horizons replace my GP?

No. We work alongside your GP. You can share your brief with them, and if there’s something worth discussing before you travel, we’ll tell you.

Who sees my health information?

Only our medical and assistance team, and only to help you. We ask for your consent before we store any health information, handle it in line with GDPR, keep it secure, and never sell it or share it without your permission. You can ask us to delete it at any time.

Can I buy Wide Horizons for my parents?

Yes. Because it involves their health, we need their consent. We’ll contact them, explain what Wide Horizons does and ask them to agree before we look at any health information. With their permission, we can keep you informed too.

What happens if I call in the middle of the night?

Our 24/7 team answers, usually within two minutes, day or night, wherever you are. They listen, work out what you need and guide you to the right care, involving our doctors and your insurer’s assistance team when needed.

Can I message instead of calling?

Yes. You can message us on WhatsApp on the same number: +49 175 49 24 136.

Which languages do you speak?

Our team speaks many languages. Tell us your preferred language when you book, and we’ll do our best to match you.

Is VAT included?

Our prices include VAT where applicable.

Is there an age limit, or places you don’t cover?

No. There’s no age limit, and we help travellers going anywhere in the world.

Already travelling and need help?
